In August the Botanic Gardens hosted a big light festival called...
Har har, Chch.
It was a great reminder that huge metropolises are not the only places in the world where cool things happen. We felt really lucky to live within walking distance. Although as one of my favorite people pointed out in college, anywhere is walking distance as long as there isn't an ocean in the way. ;)
Kids with glowsticks! Food trucks! Artsy intallations! Some of our favorites included jellyfish swimming up trees, a light up lightning storm, and a tree covered in vintage lamps. Not all of our pictures came out well because, well, it was dark, but here are a few of the better ones.

We also shot some low quality footage with our iphones, but we spiced it up with some music featuring the intellectual musings of Neil deGrasse Tyson so I think that makes up for it a little. ;)
Don't those clouds make you feel like part of a stop-motion animation?
At this point we'd been living in Christchurch for a few months, it was winter, and we'd settled into a routine. Having this dose of funky, bright, absurd, and just plain pretty felt so refreshing. We walked home, buzzing.
